March 2024
On March 3rd, Nosotras invited me to celebrate the "Day of the Vulva", showcasing my interpretation at the "Vulva Expo - Nosotras", held at City Lab in the GAM cultural centre, Santiago de Chile.
Each artist was asked to create three works. What I did was to make each piece composed of a series of three paintings, each one aiming to represent three aspects that are very important to me when referring to our vulvas:
Self-acceptance of our vulvas. As we grow, mature, and experience the changes that come with age, our bodies change. Growing up as women within a patriarchal context, we are often faced with the need to meet society's aesthetic expectations, and when we don't meet them, we tend to reject our bodies. That's why it's important to accept that our vulvas are unique, beautiful, and valid just as they are.
Understanding differences, because not everyone is the same. Just as there are different body types and that's okay, there are vulvas of different shapes, sizes, and colors, and that's perfectly fine.
Lastly, normalization. Breaking the taboos of our society and discussing the vulva with openness, as an important part of ourselves, without shame or censorship. I believe our relationship with our vulvas should be natural, and talking about, seeing, and representing our vulva should be as normal as discussing the penis openly, which has been done in artistic representations for decades.
These three aspects are key to beginning to change our perception of the vulva. For me, this marks the beginning of a change in the world's perception of the vulva. I think it's crucial that all women feel good about themselves just as they are, especially in a world that expects a lot from women and creates standards that we are supposed to meet, even in something as intimate as our vulvas.
El título de mi obra es:
"Yo soy flor, soy única y hermosa."
The title of my work is:
"I am a flower, I am unique and beautiful."
As I grew up, I was always taught that I should grow upright, following the example of the older plants, and always look presentable. Over time, I began to notice changes in my stem, my leaves, and even my roots. But when something different started to sprout and grow from me, I felt very uncomfortable. These changes embarrassed me; sometimes I saw other plants going through the same thing, but none were like me. For a while, I tried to hide it. But eventually, I understood that I am a beautiful plant, and that all my parts are unique and beautiful, including my flower. My flower is unique and beautiful.
My work is titled
"Not all are the same, but all are beautiful."
When I was a little pomegranate, I saw the other pomegranates around me, all beautiful and with many similarities. Perhaps the only differences I noticed among us were the variations in the colors of our skins, but we all grew almost without noticing it. As time passed, some pomegranates began to grow larger than others, our shapes started to change, and as we matured, each became unique and special. At times, I felt worried, sometimes ashamed, because there were pomegranates that were larger, others with more pulp, some juicier, others smaller and thinner. But with time, I understood that our shapes, colors, and sizes don't matter. We are all unique and special pomegranates. Not all are the same, but we are all beautiful.
My latest work is called
"The Girl Who Understood Everything"
Once upon a time, there was a very special girl who lived in the jungle. Everyone knew of her existence, but no one spoke of her. The other animals avoided mentioning her and she was excluded from all social events.
She didn't understand why she was excluded, ignored, and silenced, when she was also part of the jungle, just like everyone else. Why were they doing this to her, making her feel insecure and ashamed. But one day, she could no longer live in the shadows. Tired of being ignored, she opened her mind and began to soar through the jungle, showing everyone that she existed, that she deserved her place, that she was valid, natural, beautiful, and unique.
All my works go hand in hand and tell an engaging and powerful story!
